My Experience with Amateur Voice Over Talent

DeepRoar Content will always support any individual starting out in a creative profession. This includes voice-over artists or actors. If I can, I will give you a shot and pay you well for your work. But most of the time, I need a solid professional when it comes to voice-overs.

I arrived at this conclusion a long time ago. I asked someone I barely knew, who had a terrific, deep resonant speaking voice to narrate a documentary. In my mind, I could hear him reading the script and applying the nuance I felt the project needed. It was a mistake. A seven-page script took three days to record. He couldn’t do it. Everything he read sounded like he was reading a letter. All my attempts to get him to use inflection, emotion – anything other than a bland monotone was for naught. Lesson learned – the hard way.

WRITING TO BE HEARD

When I write a script, I’m actually reading out loud as I write. I spend a lot of time creating the script based on how it sounds. Those sounds, inflections, and other elements must be included when it’s recorded so that the intention – the goals of the script – are met.

Professional voice-over artists are capable of recreating those elements because they know exactly how to deliver a specific sound or inflection. This takes practice. If I hear you read a sentence and then ask you to change how you read it – it takes experience to know how to do it.

When I write a script, I want you the listener to forget about where the words and ideas are coming from. I want them to feel like they’re standing in the same room with the narrator – like the narrator is talking to them, directly. It’s a fine line but one a professional voice-over artist or actor easily accomplishes with a little coaching.
