The General John A. Logan Museum, Murphysboro, Illinois has created a memorial to honor the 200 members of the Illinois 56th Infantry who died at sea. The tragedy took place on March 31, 1865, when the troop transport General Lyon caught fire and sank. Only five members of the group survived. Until now, no memorial existed. This is the story of the decision to build the memorial.
